The government announced on 15 June 2010 that the launch of the new Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) has been halted so that the process can be remodelled to bring it back to ”proportionate, commonsense levels”. In Coventry the rugby football club no longer hosts a Playing for Success Centre A new centre has been agreed by the Department and is close to becoming operational in partnership with Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Club, The Blaze Learning Centre. John Parkes is centre manger for both Coventry PfS centres.

One of the chosen activities for pupils attending Nottingham Tennis Centre, The Ace Base Study Support Centre was a photographic competition called ‘Nottingham in Bloom’. Pupils from all five schools attending the centre during the Summer term 2010 were involved in the Nottingham in Bloom schools competition title of ‘In the Garden’. Six Ace Base pupils were finalists, three were awarded certificates of merit and three were winners. A team of youngsters from Truro City FC’s PfS centre has won second place in the regional finals of the Special People, Special Places competition held at Bristol City Football Club. Click here to view more.

Pauline and Mick from Halifax RLFC’s The Blue Base Study Centre together with some of the Halifax  RLFC players attended a Behaviour Management training course. This was presented by Brendan Loughnane (Vice Principal) and Helen Callaghan (Community Liaison Officer) from The William Henry Smith School, Brighouse. The centre will be working with pupils from the school at The Shay Stadium on 17 June and 8 July 2010 to deliver a programme that will incorporate some rugby coaching by the Fax player. This additional coaching feature has motivated the targeted group to attend the course.

Pupils from Castleford Tigers RLFC’s, The Training Den who have recently completed their PfS programme, together with their families, were joined by staff from the four schools taking part (Kippax North Primary School, Half Acres Primary School, Ackton Pastures Primary School and Kippax Ash Tree Primary School) at a hugely successful celebration event for their Playing for Success centre which took place in the Aquman Restaurant Suite at The Jungle. The Nottingham Masters took place in June at the Nottingham Tennis Centre’s, The Ace Base Study Support Centre. A range of activities and opportunities were provided to develop the knowledge and to raise awareness of the tennis tournament to pupils attending Ace Base at this time. One of the activities involved year 6 pupils from Claremont Primary School in planning, writing, filming and editing a news report. Congratulations to the following centres who gained QiSS recognition during June 2010

Crystal Palace FC Study Support Centre at Crystal Palace FC, Centre, revalidated at Advanced level.

PfS at Spurs Learning Zone at Tottenham Hotspur FC achieved Advanced status.

Newcastle Falcons Learning Centre at Newcastle Falcons RUFC and Middlesbrough Study Support Centre at Middlesbrough FC  achieved Emerged status.

Howzat Learning Centre at Sussex Country Cricket Club, revalidated at Established level.
